2020 Culinary Challenge Guidelines

The Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge is the only event for Family and Consumer Sciences/Culinary Arts students that positions them to have a direct impact on the food served in their schools.

Open to both Middle and High School students, the “challenge” at the heart of this event is one faced by school nutrition professionals every day – to create delicious, appealing dishes that comply with federal guidelines and that can be adapted by school systems throughout the region. Dishes created by teams at this event are now being served to thousands of students in the Greater Washington area.

Middle and High schools from all D.C., Northern Virginia and Suburban Maryland are eligible to participate in two categories:

Lunch Competition

Teams create a school lunch that complies with the nutritional and cost parameters of the National School Lunch Program

Teams present to a panel of judges including celebrity chefs, school nutrition professionals and students

The winning dish is featured on menus throughout the Greater D.C. region

Showcase

Teams create a Breakfast or Snack item that complies with the parameters of the National School Breakfast or Smart Snack Program

Teams are eligible to win a Community Choice award

All students have an opportunity to network with food industry professionals and present at a Public Tasting with over 350 attendees and members of the press
